He was a competitive amateur combatant and has spent his career strategizing the most effective ways to promote professional boxing. Through the years, he has been a gym owner, boxing trainer, cut man, manager, matchmaker, and advisor. His promotional company is named after his son and only child, Maximus Grant Tolzmann. Maximus has the meaning: “The Great Giver.”
Recognized as one of the pioneers in mixed martial arts, Cox actually began his combat sports career in boxing. He helped and eventually partnered with longtime promoter Fred Berns of Indianapolis on boxing events around the Midwest in 1989. He started his MMA career in 1996 and his Extreme Challenge event is the second-longest running MMA show in the nation. He has promoted more than 600 events in the U.S. and internationally.
