Little needs to be said about Donovan’s extensive and successful amateur career (11X Iowa State Champion, National Golden Gloves finalist, Olympic Trials, etc.) which was capped-off by Donovan being drafted into the World Series of Boxing – Miami Gallos Team. Against Tolzmann’s recommendation, Donovan decided to campaign at the heavyweight division, instead of his cruiserweight, which is closer to his natural weight. Nonetheless, Donovan continued to impress even at the elevated weight and competed in the ESPN2 Boxcino Heavyweight Tournament, where he made the ESPN2 “Knock-out Reel” only to lose in the finals for the WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight Title.

Donovan then experienced boxing naturally bigger men when he lost to world contender Jarrell Miller for the WBA/NABA Heavyweight Title and then to heavyweight prospect Stephen Shaw. After the collaboration with Monte Cox & Scott Tolzmann, Donovan decided to drop to cruiserweight and work toward a world title. In his last fight, Donovan stopped Brian Houston to win his third fight in a row and claim the USA Mid-America Cruiserweight championship.
